History of Art Department : University College London
Refurbishing this pair of mid-19th century Grade II listed houses in Bloomsbury for modern educational use was a challenge, yet the houses retain their historic integrity and allow the department to express its colourful personality. Restoration was essential and with the accretions of time stripped out we kept our interventions non-invasive. Simple rectilinear suspended up/down lighting aligns with the original layout and features, including the interior shutters which were restored to provide blackout. Yielding to the colours in the paintings on the walls, the palette was kept monochromatic.
