Wilkins Library : University College London
The Grade I listed Wilkins Library was of another age. Inserting a new ground floor library entrance with lift access to all floors brought it into the present day. The existing unsatisfactory vertical circulation was replaced with a new, limestone clad, helical concrete stair, woven through the newly formed void at the heart of the building. Its rectangular section bronze handrails with glass balustrades add a sinuous line to the upper reading levels. This clean, timeless solution has set the precedent for further works within UCL's most prestigious historic building.
