St John Street I : Penthouse apartment
This penthouse apartment was carved from the top floor of the redundant Scholl shoe factory in Clerkenwell. The removal of existing walls revealed an airy industrial aesthetic and a mezzanine level has been woven between the existing steel trusses. Reached via a folded plate stair, this additional accommodation manipulates the scale of the inhabited shell. A curvilinear plane enfolds the central domestic functions, separating private and shared areas. With four bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms to the east, the plan opens to living and terrace spaces that overlook London’s West End.
