Marshall Building

Collaboration with Grafton Architects as Working and Learning Environment specialist for the Marshall Building

Burwell Architects worked closely with Grafton to develop both design concepts and detailed technical proposals for the learning spaces and student commons, including six Harvard style lecture theatres, flat floored classrooms and informal study spaces.

A key factor in informing the proposals was understanding the flow of people throughout the building, specifically at the change-over between classes. Specialist studies were undertaken to model this flow which allowed the forms to be flexed to avoid congestion. The study also informed the mix and form of spaces provided in the informal student commons environment; such as group and individual study, drop-in and perch spaces, so that this could adequately support users before, between and after formal sessions.
