Crossfield Street, Deptford

New apartment block with planning consent in an historic neighbourhood of Southeast London.

Our proposed new apartment block on Crossfield Street in Deptford has been granted consent by Lewisham Council, with works ongoing. The project faces a new public open space above the Thames Tideway Tunnel development, with views across the space to the baroque St Paul’s Church.

This proposal is to replace an existing builder’s yard with a mixed-use development, consisting of employment space at ground floor level and seven residential units between first and fourth floors. The project, which was submitted for planning in 2021, will create a high quality and sustainable development that will bring community benefits, and integrate the site into the surrounding neighbourhoods and historical context.

The design of the building is broken into two brick blocks by a central glazed core element. The uppermost floors of the two blocks are set back and clad in metal and chamfered to reduce the building mass from street level and from a school playground-facing elevation to the rear of the building. The ground floor commercial spaces use differing materials to the residential accommodation above, creating a ‘plinth’, defining the usage of each space, and bringing a human scale to the project at ground level.
