The redevelopment of the Roger Needham Building (RNB) marks a significant step in the University of Cambridge’s vision to create a world-class Engineering Centre of Excellence. Designed to support cross-disciplinary research and academic innovation, the Stage 2 proposals reimagine the existing site as a flexible, collaborative, and highly connected environment.

A new central atrium will form the social and spatial heart of the building, linking wings and levels across the site. The atrium anchors a dynamic mix of teaching, research, and communal spaces, designed to foster informal interaction and knowledge exchange.

The ground floor will feature state-of-the-art laboratories and an open, publicly accessible realm, providing a welcoming threshold for the wider West Cambridge campus. Upper levels balance flexible workspaces with acoustically optimised research zones, tailored to the needs of advanced engineering and information technologies.

Stage 2 design development has focused on user consultation, spatial testing, and technical planning for labs, offices, and shared spaces. The evolving proposals reflect the University’s commitment to research excellence, sustainability, and interdisciplinary learning.
