We’re pleased to announce that construction is now underway on the transformation of The Great Hall at Imperial College London, marking a major milestone in the delivery of a new, high-performance multipurpose space at the heart of the South Kensington Campus.
Led by Burwell Architects, the project will reconfigure the iconic venue to accommodate a wide range of academic and cultural uses. From lectures, exams, and graduations to Friday prayers and orchestral performances. Working in close collaboration with Mace, the refurbishment focuses on flexibility, acoustic excellence, and user experience.
At the heart of the design is a fully reconfigurable layout, enabled by moveable partitions and retractable seating. The transformed hall will seamlessly shift between a single grand auditorium and three independent lecture theatres, each acoustically engineered to suit its use.
In addition to the spatial transformation, the scheme includes upgraded lighting, AV infrastructure, finishes, and mechanical systems, which improve comfort, energy performance, and accessibility. The works are being carefully phased to minimise disruption within the live campus environment.
This flagship upgrade will ensure that The Great Hall continues to serve as a dynamic and inclusive venue for the entire Imperial College community.
