Student Unions, University of Plymouth

A vibrant social hub reimagined for student life

At the heart of the University of Plymouth’s city-centre campus, the Students’ Union Building (UPSU) has been transformed into a dynamic, inclusive and multi-functional space that reflects the evolving needs of today’s student community.

Delivered in close partnership between the university and UPSU, the project reconfigures and refurbishes key areas of the existing SU to enhance accessibility, usability and atmosphere. The redesign introduces a series of welcoming and adaptable environments that support everything from day-to-day socialising to large-scale events and student-led initiatives.

The main entrance has been reimagined to provide better shelter, intuitive access and a generous foyer space designed for student activities and pop-up events. A new layout improves connectivity between the SU’s key spaces, while upgraded sound, lighting and signage elevate the overall experience.

Internally, spaces like The Snug, Illusion and Sublime have each been redesigned to serve multiple purposes throughout the day and night. These areas now offer a mix of soft seating pods with integrated tech, HD projection displays, flexible bars, improved lighting and dedicated zones for both study and play. New locker facilities, 24/7 access and acoustic upgrades further enhance the building’s functionality.

Whether hosting society meetings, live performances, DJ nights, or quiet coffee breaks, the new Students’ Union supports the wellbeing and aspirations of every student, offering a flexible and future-ready space that is both welcoming and empowering.
