The Great Hall, Imperial College London

A flagship transformation for flexible learning, performance, and celebration

Burwell Architects are leading the refurbishment of the Great Hall at Imperial College London, reimagining the largest event space on the South Kensington Campus to meet the evolving demands of higher education.

The design introduces a dynamic reconfiguration strategy that allows the hall to shift seamlessly between one grand auditorium and three acoustically independent lecture theatres, with capacities of approximately 170, 265, and 140 students. State-of-the-art retractable seating, moveable partitions, and integrated AV systems enable the space to adapt instantly to a wide variety of uses, from lectures, exams, and Friday prayers to graduations, orchestral rehearsals, and major performances.

Alongside its spatial agility, the refurbishment delivers significant upgrades to user experience and accessibility. Circulation routes are improved with widened corridors and new connections from the Sherfield Walkway, while wheelchair platform lifts and enhanced level access will make the hall fully inclusive for the first time.

Sustainability is central to the project. New curtain wall glazing introduces natural daylight, while efficient mechanical and electrical systems reduce environmental impact. Low-carbon materials, including timber floors, ceilings, and linings, alongside reused structural steel, have been carefully selected following a Whole Life Carbon Assessment. The project is targeting BREEAM Very Good.

Developed in consultation with Imperial’s teaching staff, students, and event organisers, the refurbishment embodies a black-box theatre approach, concealing advanced systems within a clean architectural frame. High-quality finishes and cutting-edge acoustic performance ensure the Great Hall remains a venue of both prestige and practicality, a space that can work harder and smarter day in, day out.

Currently at RIBA Stage 3, the project will move into detailed design and procurement, with construction due to commence in the coming months. Once complete, the Great Hall will stand as a symbol of Imperial’s commitment to innovation, flexibility, and sustainability, continuing its role at the heart of campus life for generations to come.
